Introduction

The programme develops both the knowledge and the practical skills relevant and necessary to an individual student’s practice of human resource management (HRM), both in the immediate and long term future. The scheme is made up of the following four elements:

Four generalist HR modules, dealing with the professional knowledge and skills required to be an effective HR practitioner:

People Resourcing, Employee Reward, Employee Relations and Learning and Development.

People Management And Development – a double module that builds on the generalist modules by looking at the wider contextual and strategic issues, as well as integrating the four into a more holistic view of HRM.

Leadership and Management – this element consists of two modules, one of which focuses on managing information (statistics, finance and systems) and the other more generally at aspects of leadership and management beyond pure HR.

The applied field - practical aspects of HRM are further emphasised by a management report based on research carried out in the student’s workplace between the second / third years, or in the last term of the third year There is a continued development of skills throughout the programme, becoming focused on those of the specialist in professional development workshops and by logbook assembly – all aimed at creating a “Thinking Performer”. This is a professional HR practitioner who can perform to the highest levels of competence, and who can also think and reflect on their own and their organisation’s practices for maximum benefit.

Entry requirements

There are no formal minimum entry requirements laid down by CIPD or the university. Decisions are made on an individual basis by UCO staff based on an appropriate mix of both qualifications and experience. Common routes to entry include one of the Level 3 Certificates (e.g. Certificate in Personnel Practice), a degree and/or relevant experience in HR or management. UCO tutors may recommend that applicants re-apply having gained extra qualifications or experience as a preparation for the course. Our aim is to ensure that we have students on the course that is most suitable for them.

In a few cases, it may be possible for prior qualifications at the appropriate level to be accredited against parts of the programme. Individuals are advised to discuss the process with the course team.  The MBA is recognised for this purpose by the CIPD.

Students are required to be in membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development – arrangements can be made for this in the first few weeks of study.

Course structure

Attendance is primarily one afternoon and one evening each week of the semester.  A three day residential is held in each of the first two years of the course.  Non-residential block study days are a feature of the third year. Both residential and block days are held during the week.

The course follows the academic year from September, in preparation for assessments in both January and May.  The course can now be completed in either 2.5 years or 3 years, dependent on students’ choice as to the timing of the Management Research Report element.

Year One concentrates on the generalist HR modules

Year Two includes People Management and Development plus Managing Information for Competitive Advantage

Year Three concludes with the remaining Leadership and Management module and Management Research report

Professional Development modules run in each year of the course

Graduate Membership of CIPD is awarded upon successful completion of the programme, and upgrade to full Chartered membership is possible (see below).

Teaching and assessment

Assessment through the programme is varied, including standard examinations and assignments, a case study, a work-based management report, and skills logbook / portfolio. Each module is assessed by one method, with the mix coming across the programme as a whole.

Assessments are designed to both measure and develop critical awareness and knowledge of current problems and research, ensuring the student is at the forefront of HR thinking. Equally important is the development of the ability to be reflective and to apply knowledge and theory to practical situations. Full feedback is provided to encourage development from one assessment to the next.

Teaching is by a variety of methods with a mix of tutors from both Oldham and visiting from the main campus in Huddersfield. An emphasis is placed on group discussions to promote sharing of practice and perspectives amongst the students.

Career opportunities

University Centre Oldham / Huddersfield University is now an approved CIPD upgrade centre.  Upon successful completion of the PDS, with the appropriate amount of relevant experience and demonstrated continuing professional development, students can upgrade to full membership of the Institute, ie Chartered MCIPD.
