Graduate Awards Ceremonies 2005
Awards Ceremonies 2005
The Oldham Awards Ceremonies – Saturday 5 November – for the graduates of the former Oldham Business Management School, now the new University Centre Oldham, and the Oldham College marked the end of an era in the town
When this year’s graduates formally received their awards in the Oldham Parish Church, the Oldham Business Management School took its place in the history of the successful growth and development of the institution, and in its stead, the town’s new University Centre is now moving things into the future.

“We wanted to make this year’s ceremonies really special for the graduates,” said Debbie Bridge, Head of the new University Centre Oldham. “Although, we are now the University Centre, the same teaching staff, technicians and support staff enabled these students to graduate, and we are very proud of their achievements.”
The graduates at the ceremonies spanned a range of subjects that comprised honours degrees, foundation degrees and HND awards in subjects including Business Management, Law, Information Technology, Multimedia, and Teacher Training. Both full-time and part-time students attended on the day.
Says Debbie: “Although many of the same subjects and courses will be offered at the new University Centre Oldham, we are also looking to expand our current portfolio for the coming years. New subjects include degrees in English, History, Politics, and Sociology through the combined arts programme, the BA (Hons) Humanities. We have also started a new degree, the BSc (Hons) Health & Community Studies, which, from this year’s take-up, looks like being a very popular course indeed.”

First Class Honours
This year’s graduation ceremonies were a particular celebration for the 13 students who received a first class honours award in their degree.
Mohammed Abbas, Fozia Ali and Dominic Andrejczak (pictured left to right below) were just three of the students who received a ‘first’. All three graduated from the BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems degree.

Mohammed Abbas, 24, from Glodwick, Oldham, firstly completed an HND where he was awarded 10 distinctions and five merits. He was then able to enrol on the final-year of the BSc Business Information Systems to ‘top-up’ his qualifications to honours degree level.
Dominic Andrejczak was interested in studying for a career in computing, specifically to do with networks and computer programming, and he enrolled on the degree in Oldham in 2002. The 26-year-old, from Hathershaw, Oldham, now wants to get his career going and is initially keen to do so voluntary work to gain more experience in his chosen field.
Fozia Ali’s sister went to University and now she has followed suit, leaving their father a very proud man . “Having had two of his daughters go to University, my father is now an avid supporter of the value of higher education as a life-changing experience,” said the 23-year-old from Clarksfield, Oldham. “I have to say a really big thank you to the teaching staff who were very supportive throughout my course, and always treated me as an individual. It was their help and support that enabled me to get a first in my degree.”
Fozia has now returned to the University Centre Oldham to study to become a lecturer herself on the one-year, full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The PGCE is a professional qualification for teaching in either Further Education, Higher Education or Adult Education and Training.
